The Advil Pain Equity course

Created in partnership with Morehouse School of Medicine and BLKHLTH, The Advil Pain Equity Course aims to equip medical trainees with the knowledge, tools, and resources to understand and address racial health inequities in pain prevention, treatment, and management.

Illuminating the impact of pain equity through powerful research

Advil, with guidance from Morehouse School of Medicine, surveyed 2000 people in America to assess the real impact of pain on their lives. Topics included pain experience, life impact, pain management, and perceived bias. The study found that 64% of Black individuals felt their healthcare providers treat people of their race and ethnicity worse than people of other races and ethnicities.

Funding solutions to progress medical education

The launch of Advil’s Pain Equity Fund included grants to both Morehouse School of Medicine and BLKHLTH. Part of the grants will be used to partner with other leading experts to begin to develop a pain-equity-focused training for medical students that will be piloted this fall.

Developing tools and resources for improved pain management

A workshop during National Pain Awareness Month with Morehouse School of Medicine students aimed to better understand the key drivers of inequitable pain care and what needs to change from a medical training perspective. This resulted in the development of digital tools and resources aimed at helping Black patients improve their clinical experience in the near term.

CREATING INFORMATIVE CONTENT TO SUPPORT THE COMMUNITY

We partnered with iOne Digital, the Number One source for urban content, to develop a video series featuring healthcare professionals diving into reproduction and mental health issues—two topics that are prevalent in the Black community and are greatly impacted by implicit bias.

Key Terms

  • BIAS

    A preference in favor of or against a group of people. Racial bias is a preference in favor of or against a group of people based on perceived race.

  • PAIN BIAS

    A false belief or misconception about biological differences related to race or ethnicity that impacts the way a healthcare provider perceives, assesses, diagnoses, or treats a patient of that race or ethnicity.

  • MEDICAL RACISM

    Prejudice and discrimination in the medical system based on race. It shows up as differential treatment by race and lack of Black doctors.

  • HEALTH DISPARITIES

    Differences in the health status of different groups of people. Health disparities persist because racism impacts different groups access to societal resources.

  • HEALTH INEQUITY

    Differences in the opportunities groups have to achieve good health. These differences lead to unfair and avoidable differences in health outcomes.

  • PAIN EQUITY

    Pain equity occurs when everyone can meet their full health potential - including pain prevention and relief.

  • PAIN INEQUITY

    The systemic difference in opportunities groups have to achieve pain relief, leading to unfair and avoidable differences in health outcomes.

  • STRUCTURAL RACISM

    The structures, such as laws, policies, cultural values, and societal norms, that uphold racism.

  • SYSTEMIC RACISM

    The systems (political, economic, health care, school, and criminal justice) that uphold racism. Structural racism is a part of systemic racism.
